Introduction to Censhorship

I believe that all of us have already heard about "censorship" either from mass media or colleagues. If you have ever seen a picture of victim of crimes is blurred on television or their voice is given some noises to prevent people from knowing their true identity, then it means that you have already seen one kind of censorship on television. Censorship itself is not only found in the form of news reports and television programs. But also, it can be found in the form of speech, art, books, photography, internet. So, what is censorship? Is it something which preventing you from watching the whole part of movies you like? Is it something to preserve certain moral values that some of us might believe? Or is it actually something to perpetuate the power of an oppressive regime? So, in order to answer these questions, we need to know the definition of censorship first.

Based on wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, Censorship is the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body. It can be done by governments and private organizations or by individuals who engage in self-censorship.  While Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia defines censorship as supervision and control of the information and ideas that are circulated among the people within a society. In modern times, censorship also refers to the examination of books, periodicals, plays, films, television and radio programs, news reports, and other communication media for the purpose of altering or suppressing parts thought to be objectionable or offensive. The point is censorship limits information we may access and spread. So, I believe that you have your own answers of the questions above right now.

The objectives of censorship itself may vary from one country to another. One country may use it to perpetuate their power by giving a little space or even no space of speech and channel for their aspirations. While another country may use it to prevent harms and protect the rights of society. Some others even haven't imposed rules of censorship to their society.  SoI hope that now you've got a grasp of what censorship is.
